Athletics Transition

Middle Georgia State University has initiated a plan to transition its intercollegiate athletics program membership from the National Intercollegiate Athletics Association (NAIA) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division II. Currently fielding 10 NAIA sports with about 180 student-athletes, the University plans to add women’s track (long distance only) in the coming years.

In February 2023, the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents approved the University’s request to pursue a change to the University’s athletic competition level and add a women’s distance track team. MGA determined that that NCAA Division and its approach to intercollegiate athletics better aligns with the University’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. With the transition, the institution will join other NCAA Division II schools in the state university sector within the University System of Georgia (USG). With the approval to pursue NCAA Division II, MGA formally requested consideration for membership to the Peach Belt Conference. The institutions of the Peach Belt Conference are more similar to MGA and provide the opportunity to develop in-state rivalries. The decreased geographic footprint of the Peach Belt Conference means less travel time and less time away from the classroom.
