A bit of athletic history was made Monday, April 22, when three Northside High School students signed to play for the first new intercollegiate team created by Middle Georgia State College.

Shelby Ashley, Nate Ashley and Tricia Wharton will play men's or women's tennis for the Knights. The teams will compete in Region 17, the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association of the NJCAA.

The teams will play on the Cochran Campus beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year.

Middle Georgia State College was created in January 2013 through the merger of Macon State College and Middle Georgia College. Students of the combined institution chose “Knights” as the new college’s mascot. Purple, black and silver/gray are the new colors.

As the "Warriors," the former Middle Georgia College fielded men's and women's teams in basketball and soccer, a men's baseball team and a women's softball team. Those teams, now joined by tennis, are transitioning into the "Knights."

All intercollegiate sports are based on the Cochran Campus and will, for now, continue to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association but will eventually seek to join the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
