Macon, GA

Middle Georgia State College has officially applied for membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). As a four-year institution that offers 17 baccalaureate degrees, a move to an intercollegiate athletic association with four years of athlete eligibility will better align with the overall mission of the college.

Middle Georgia State is currently a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). MGSC offers eight varsity sports that are key to the move and conference affiliation at the NAIA level: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and men’s and women’s tennis.

The institution is now entering the process of site visits by the NAIA and potential conferences for approval of membership. The membership committee will make a site visit before the annual April meeting of the Council of Presidents where the committee will make a recommendation on membership for the institution. If approval is given at that time, the institution will be eligible to begin NAIA competition effective August 1, 2014.

Director of Athletics Charles Mullis said, “This is a historic moment for Middle Georgia State College. The move from a two-year athletic program to a four-year program will provide our student-athletes the opportunity to complete their degree while continuing to play for the Knights.”
