About 70 graduates in nursing, respiratory therapy and health services administration will be recognized at the Middle Georgia State College School of Health Sciences' annual pinning ceremony, set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Grand Opera House in downtown Macon. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ninfa Saunders, president and CEO of Central Georgia Health System.

A pinning ceremony is time-honored tradition where health sciences graduates are symbolically ushered into their profession. The tradition is traced to the 12th century, when a group of monks cared for the sick and injured during the Crusades and were brought into the “Knights Order.” Each monk was given a Maltese cross. In the 1860s, Florence Nightingale received a medal for caring for soldiers during the Crimean War. She was presented a medal of excellence for her service. The pin today symbolizes the cross healthcare providers bear when taking care of their patients.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Ninfa Saunders, oversees the operations of The Medical Center of Central Georgia as well as the Medcen Community Health Foundation, Central Georgia Rehabilitation Hospital, Central Georgia Home Health and Home Care Services, Health Services of Central Georgia, Pine Pointe Hospice and Palliative Care and Carlyle Place.

Saunders has close to 40 years of hospital administrative and clinical experience. She holds a doctorate in healthcare administration from the Medical University of South Carolina, a master of business administration from Emory University and a master of science in nursing from Rutgers University. She has received numerous awards for leadership and philanthropy.
