12/2/13 Duke Report

After a hiatus for the Thanksgiving Holidays, the Duke Report returns to give you an update on all the action from the past two weeks. The weeks of 11/18 and 11/25 saw action for the women’s and men’s basketball teams and the football team.

Football:
Knights football hosted the South Atlantic Conference Championship on November 23 at Bleckley County High School’s Royals Stadium in Cochran, GA. The game matched the Knights against the Gladiators of Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College out of South Carolina. The Knights opened an early 13-0 lead with a touchdown pass from Kion Button (McIntosh County Academy) to Quez Mahoganey (Wilcox County HS) followed by a touchdown run from Rico Lyons (Mary Persons HS). The Gladiators fought back with two touchdowns to make it 13-12. An injury to Button forced the Knights to turn to back up QB Ken Hughes (Bleckley County HS) and he connected with Kwamaine Outlaw (Wilcox County HS) for a TD late in the first half to make the half time score 19-12.

The second half saw a great defensive battle before the Gladiators scored in the 4th quarter to get the score to 19-18. After the Knights were stopped on the OC Tech 5, the defense stepped up and John Cody Riley (McIntosh County Academy) got an interception return for touchdown to give the Knights an 8 point lead with just under 2 minutes to play. The first play of the ensuing drive resulted in a 68 yard touchdown pass by the Gladiators on a pass that was tipped away from one receiver and into the hands of another but a unsportsmanlike penalty against the Gladiators had them attempting the two point conversion from the 18 and failed on a pass out of the back of the end zone. The Knights then recovered the onside kick and took three knees to run out the clock and get the win 26-24. Hughes finished the day with 170 total yards and Lyons with 89 yards (1059 on the season) while Monty Wright had 6 tackles (71 on the season, 12 sacks) and Dom Jordan had a sack and forced fumble to give him 18 sacks and 4 forced fumbles on the season.

On Monday the 25th, the Knights were voted number on in the NCFA polls and selected to face Coppin State University in the NCFA National Championship at 6PM on December 7 in Salem, VA. The game will be shown live at www.ustream.tv. Check www.ihigh.com/mgsknights for updates and the link to the game.
