Rather than books or computers or scientific equipment, the newest resource available to Middle Georgia State University students has a more fashionable vibe.

On Monday, April 10, students, faculty and staff on MGA’s Macon Campus celebrated the grand opening of the Professional Closet, part of the Office of Career Services. At the Closet, MGA students can find affordable prices on attire suitable for job interviews, career fairs, conferences and presentations, or other situations when jeans and a t-shirt won’t make the cut.

“This is a day to celebrate,” said Dr. Melinda Robinson-Moffett, Career Services director. “No longer do we want to hear, ‘I don’t have anything to wear.’”

The Closet’s stylish offerings come from donations from members of the MGA community and can be purchased for $5 or less per item.

MGA’s president, Dr. Christopher Blake, spoke at the grand opening event, which kicked off with a fashion show in the lobby of the Student Life Center. The Professional Closet, said Blake to the assembled students, “serves you, serves your future, and helps you build your career. You can look your professional best without hurting your pocket.”

The Professional Closet was founded in 2013 by School of Education faculty members Molly Kimsey and Dr. Loleta Sartin (you can read more about the project’s beginnings and development here). Kimsey was on hand Monday, offering warm thanks to the many staff members and volunteers that have worked towards the growth of the Closet both before and since its transition to the Office of Career Services. Also appearing – as both a fashion model and a speaker at the opening – was SGA president TeAndre Dennis.

“As college students, we all know about affordability,” said Dennis. “This is an amazing opportunity; please take advantage of this resource.”

More About The Professional Closet:

New and gently used suitable-for-work clothing and accessories, including ties and shoes, are available for purchase to MGA students, alumni, faculty and staff through Career Services offices on the Macon Campus (Student Life Center, Suite 254) and Cochran Campus (Sanford Hall, Suite 112). The cost of any single item does not exceed $5, and all proceeds are reinvested into The Professional Closet.

Macon’s Professional Closet will be open during the University’s normal business hours, 8:00-5:30 Mon.-Thurs. and 8:00-noon on Fridays. The Office of Career Services will announce the opening of the Cochran Professional Closet once that project, now underway, nears completion.

Donations of new and gently used attire are welcome, and pickup can be arranged. The Professional Closet also accepts donations of laundry detergent, fabric sprays and hangers. Call (478) 471-2714.

As a convenience, The Professional Closet also takes donations of non-perishable food items for the SHARE Pantry, a service of the Student Life office for students, faculty and staff. Call (478) 471-2714.
