School of Aviation Launches Part-Time Aircraft Structural Tech Program Option

Middle Georgia State University's School of Aviation is launching a part-time program option for people interested in aircraft repair and maintenance careers.

Beginning August 14, the School of Aviation is offering the certificate program in Aircraft Structural Technology in the evenings, with classes split between the University's Eastman and Dublin campuses.

"The program is five semesters long and covers the basics of sheet metal and composite repair and construction," said Martin Kehayes, chair of the School of Aviation's Aviation Maintenance and Structural Technology department. "We designed the part-time option to give flexibility to people in the region who are interested in this in-demand field."

Middle Georgia State will hold classes from 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Eastman Campus. Students will take an additional class from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays on the Dublin Campus.

A student who begins the program this fall could complete it by spring semester 2019. Kehayes said civilian aircraft structural technicians are in demand by the U.S. Department of Defense and by many aerospace contractors, as well as aircraft manufacturers such as Lockheed, Gulfstream and Boeing.
