Finding Greatness: Hunter Holland

History major Hunter Holland, who is aiming for graduate school and a career in sports journalism, is captain of the Middle Georgia State equestrian team and a member of the President’s Torch Society.

Full Name: Hunter Ray Holland.

Age: 22. Hometown: "I grew up in Hawkinsville, GA, which is about ten minutes from the Cochran Campus." Residence: Perry. High School: "I attended Hawkinsville High School and while there I earned a varsity letter in football, cross country, track, and golf. I was also active in One Act Competition and competed in literary competition."

Family: "The family that I grew up with includes my mother, Lisa Holland, my sisters, Ansley and Caroline, and my little brother Blaine."

Employment: "I worked at Sandy Beach Water Park in Macon for the summer and into the fall semester. I am also a full-time student."

Degree Objective: Bachelor of Arts in History.

Class Rank: Senior.

Primary Campus: "While I attend classes on both the Macon and Cochran campuses, I claim the Cochran Campus as my primary campus because I have spent more time there and is where I feel closer to."

Activities: "I am currently the captain of the Middle Georgia State University equestrian team and am also on the membership committee in the President’s Torch Society."

Career Goals: "I want to graduate with my degree in history and, with the research skills I gained, pursue a master's degree in journalism. I'd like to become a sports journalist."

He chose Middle Georgia State University because … "Originally because cause the Cochran Campus is in such close proximity to my hometown. My mother also had previously attended Middle Georgia State before it reached the status of University. She told me how great the people at Middle Georgia State are, from the friendliness of the other students to the level of support that the professors will give to help you to reach your goals."

The greatest thing he discovered about Middle Georgia State was … "Just the overall friendliness on the campuses between students and the variety of student clubs that are available."

His greatest academic experience as a Middle Georgia State student has been … "One of my greatest academic experiences would have to be the sense of camaraderie and friendly competition that you can foster with some of your classmates. Even if it was something along the lines of 'whoever scores lower on this test today buys lunch,' it’s that sense of competition that has helped to push me academically."

To him, “greatness” means … "Working hard and not quitting until you reach your goals. Whether they were set by you or by a mentor, those goals help you develop perseverance and diligence and will ultimately help you to aspire to greatness. Greatness isn’t something handed to you, you have to strive for greatness and work towards it. A quote that has stayed with me that helps to motivate me to strive for greatness is: 'Diligence should be your watchword. Whatever you do, do well, and may success attend your efforts.'"

In five years … "Professionally, I hope to be working in the field of sports journalism and hopefully covering college football. Personally, I hope to have traveled some and found a couple of acres of land where I can build a house."
