With a goal of working in the animation industry, Daisja Butts – a member of the MGA Knights women’s basketball team – created her own academic path through the bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Full Name: Daisja Butts.

Age: 23.

Hometown: Rex, Ga.

High School: Stockbridge High School, where she was a member of the basketball team, art club, National Arts Honor Society, and Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy.

Family: Feltonisha, mom; Leonard, dad; Donavin, brother; Kiarra, sister.

Employment: Full-time student.

Degree Objective: Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in information technology.

Class Rank: Fifth-year senior.

Primary Campus: Cochran.

Activities: Plays guard for the MGA Knights women’s basketball team.

Career Goals: “My ultimate career goal is to be a character designer or sketch artist in the animation industry. I have always had a love for drawing, art, and anime.”

She I chose Middle Georgia State University because … “I was looking for a place to further my education while having a good on-campus experience. Although MGA did not have the exact major I wanted, I have been able to take courses to prepare me for the career field I want to be in, thanks to the flexibility of the Interdisciplinary Studies degree.”

The greatest thing she discovered about Middle Georgia State was … “The sense of community among the students. Once you are able to find a group of people who share some of your interests then you can make friends with long-lasting bonds. I have especially experienced this while being on the basketball team. I have been on many diverse basketball teams, yet MGA’s basketball team has proven to be something different. Especially this year, I feel like the chemistry among the players is strong and it is showing up on the court.”

Her greatest academic experience as a Middle Georgia State student has been … “Making the President’s List every semester. This has been no easy task, especially since I play basketball. Yet with God, family, and friends I can lean on to encourage me, I was able to remain motivated. I also plan on making the President’s List this semester, my last one before I graduate.

“Another experience has been being able to finish physical science with an ‘A.’ I do not know how that happened because the class was hard I struggled all semester and I think it was the most difficult class I have taken in my college career. So to be able to pass the class with an ‘A’ is more than I could have ever asked for as far as an academic goal.”

To her, greatness means … “To be your very best every day. I believe that every day we can all take steps to get closer to what we want to do and where we want to be in life. If we are not striving to be our best every day, then what’s the point?”

In five years … “I see myself being well established in my career field. I will have branched off from the corporate industry and have started my own animation business. I will be working with a team that I have established, and we will be creating animated series that are broadcast on different animation viewing sites.  I see myself growing personally by being on my own – with a puppy! – and planning my wedding. I will settle into a church home and hopefully be enjoying life while growing stronger mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.”
