2025 College Town Film Series Explores Movies Centered On Newspaper Journalism

"Ripped From The Headlines" is the theme of the 2025 College Town Film Series, which kicks off Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Douglass Theater in downtown Macon.

A collaboration of Middle Georgia State University (MGA), Wesleyan College, and Mercer University, the annual College Town Film Series brings students, faculty, and the public together to view and discuss educational and entertaining films with a common theme. A professor from each institution hosts the discussions. 

Here’s more about the 2025 film selections and the screening schedule:

7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, Ace In The Hole (1951) - Frustrated former journalist Chuck Tatum now working for an Albuquerque newspaper exploits a story about trading post owner Leo Minosa trapped in a cave to rekindle Chuck's career, but the story soon escalates into a media circus. (IMDB) Discussion led by Patrick Brennan of Middle Georgia State University.

7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, The Paper (1994) - New York City tabloid editor Henry's faced with tough decisions while he faces several serious life challenges, and a tempting job offer. (IMDB) Discussion led by Tom Ellington of Wesleyan College.

7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, Spotlight (2015) - The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core. (IMDB) Discussion led by Evey Wetherbee Wilson of Mercer University.

Admission is free to students of the three institutions (show your ID). $5 admission for everyone else. Tickets may be purchased at the door. The Douglass Theater is located at 355 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Macon.
