IT major Nicholas Gray, who tutors other students in math and computer science, is aspiring to work in web or web-adjacent technologies as a software engineer.

Full Name: Nicholas Gray.

Hometown: Chickamauga, Ga.

Residence: Macon.

Employment: Computer science and mathematics tutor, Middle Georgia State.

Degree Objective: Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, software engineering concentration.

Class Rank: Senior.

Primary Campus: Macon.

Career Goals: “I aim to be a software engineer working in web or web-adjacent technologies. I love designing and implementing systems, solving difficult problems, and building things with code. Web technologies make the things I implement visible quickly, which motivates me to work harder on the things I already enjoy.”

He chose Middle Georgia State University (MGA) because … “It has a well-reviewed information technology program and the school accepted many of my transfer credits. The opportunity to get away from where I had been all of my life, complete my undergraduate degree, and focus on building my technical skills in whatever free time I had left after handling my coursework was too great to pass up. Jumping into a school where I knew nobody forced me to develop interpersonal skills and adjust my outlook to handle the unknowns.”

The greatest thing he discovered about Middle Georgia State was … “The professors! Many of the best experiences I have had in a classroom occurred at MGA. While the major-specific professors are excellent, I was amazed by the skill and passion of the professors in mathematics, political science, and English. Working as a tutor on campus, I had the opportunity to engage with many professors that I otherwise wouldn't have. This has only reinforced my view on the caliber of professors present here.”

His greatest academic experience as a Middle Georgia State student has been … “Studying calculus in Dr. Matt Noble's class. He singlehandedly revitalized my love for mathematics and academia through carefully paced lectures and a depth of subject knowledge that encouraged deep and meaningful questions.”

To him, greatness means … “Mastery of a domain - that is, the breadth and depth of knowledge accompanied by the careful hand steadied by extensive practice.”

In five years … “I see myself on track to be a senior engineer. I hope to fulfil my academic goals, as I am considering pursuing a master's degree. I am also teaching myself physics, and I hope to have a more-than-decent grasp of that subject within five years.”
