English major Sabrina Tingle, a tutor in MGA’s Writing Center, is preparing for a career teaching at the high school level. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honors society.

“Going to a school where the professors take the time to get to know the students was something I knew I needed, and I found it here.”

Full Name: Sabrina Tingle.

Age: 19.

Hometown: Fayetteville, Ga.

High School: Fayette County High School, where she played varsity softball for 4 years.

Family: Parents, Bobbie and Peyton; sisters, Amelia, Sam, and Destiny.

Employment: “I am a writing tutor at The Writing Center at MGA.”

Degree Objective: Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in secondary education.

Class Rank: Sophomore.

Activities: “I am a member of English Studies Organization and Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honors Society).”

Career Goals: “I want to be a high school English teacher. Since childhood, my English teachers have been some of my biggest supporters, and I want to be that same positive influence for future students.”

She chose Middle Georgia State University because … “The main reason was because of the secondary education program. I always knew that I wanted to be an English major, but I also wanted to study education. When looking into my options, I found MGA’s program and loved it. Another big factor was that I wanted to attend a school that was away from home, but not too far. Considering the programs and location, I decided to tour the Macon Campus. The campus itself was beautiful and everyone I talked to was very welcoming. At that point I knew MGA would be the perfect school for me.”

The greatest thing she discovered about Middle Georgia State was … “How personal the experience is. Going to a school where the professors take the time to get to know the students was something I knew I needed, and I found it here. There is genuine care and concern from most professors. In my experience, I have received more support and encouragement than I originally expected to get before coming here. I feel like my professors really care about my success and are pushing me to do greater things.”

Her greatest academic experience as a Middle Georgia State student has been … “My literature classes. While the readings can be a bit overwhelming at times, I always end up enjoying them. Being in a room where everyone is encouraged to make and share ideas about literature is the highlight of a lot of my days. Also, the knowledge I have learned and the friends I have made in these classes have shaped me and my university experience for the better.”

To her, greatness means … “Staying true to yourself. As a liberal arts major, people will often question why you are not studying a more ‘profitable’ subject. Greatness is being able to ignore this rhetoric, which is entirely false, and doing what you want to do. If I had listened to the people that tried to persuade me to give up on my passion, then I would not have achieved as much as I have. I go to class every day excited to pursue what I love and am driven to work hard and succeed because I know I am doing what is right for me. To achieve greatness, you need to do what is right for you.”

In five years … “After graduating, I expect to start teaching as soon as possible. I do plan on eventually continuing my education, but I want to focus on my career for a while first. Also, when I am a teacher, I want to work in a school closer to my family. While I do love living on campus now, moving closer to home and being able see my sisters and pets whenever I want to is definitely something I am looking forward to!”
