the demand for prompting in completing tasks. Implementing music in diverse forms such as
song creations, instrument playing, technology, etc. has allowed instructors to encourage these
desired behaviors. Furthermore, a study described in Desrochers, Oshlag, & Kennelly’s (2014)
summary article, “Using Background Music to Reduce Problem Behavior during Assessment
with an Adolescent,” children with visual impairments often engage in stereotypical behaviors
such as rocking or repetitive hand movements in order to generate a sense of stimulation;
however, research showed that these behaviors were reduced when music was introduced as a
contrasting form of stimulation. Conclusively, as music and auditory stimulation become more
prevalent as forms of therapy for students with visual impairments, it is important to examine the
impact it has on their cognitive development.
