American history, and the Dakota continue to fight against the imperialism of the United States
government’s policies regarding Native Nations’ sovereignty. The narrative of the Dakota War is
evolving, transitioning from a story driven by the remembered anguish of small white
communities to a more encompassing history which respects the complexities of the
relationships between Native Nations and the United States of America.
