seen as something not real, something that exists only in her mind, but that, unfortunately, is so
strong that it is hard to silence.

Another important part of Jung’s theories is the idea of archetypes, and this idea is seen in
Sophie’s mind too. According to Jung, the archetypes are divided in three components: one called
the ego, one the self, and one the soul (Yetwin). The self is recognized in the “supraordinate
personality” that is made by a figure such as one of the fairy tales. In fact, the first archetype that
Sophie makes is the Princess. According to her ego and her personal unconscious, she has to be a
princess. She creates this archetype because her dreams revolve around her being saved by a prince
who will marry her, making her fairy tale come true. The second archetype that she creates is the
ego. According to Jung, the ego goes along with the self because it cannot help but be confused by
the unconscious mind (Yetwin). So, the second archetype is nothing other than a stronger
conviction that being a princess is Sophie’s only possible way to survive. The last archetype, or
soul, is the one that, according to Jung, reflects Sophie’s real personality (Yetwin). It is created
when she understands that she does not need a prince to survive, but a true friend who will always
stay at her side. At this moment, Sophie accepts that her dreams need to change and that she is part
of the Evil school. The archetypes become her role as savior of the fairytale world. She is, in fact,
together with Agatha, the only one with the ability to balance the good and evil parts of their world.
Thanks to the last archetypes that she creates, Sophie is more conscious of her own persona and she
finally accepts who she really is. So it can be said that, the first archetypes that she creates are made
to support all those ideas that her personal unconscious is emphasizing, while the last one is the one
she creates at the end of the story. It helps Sophie’s persona to be stronger than her collective
unconscious mind and ego, and makes her soul prevail over her wrong beliefs and self-confidence.

Thanks to the analysis of the archetypes, it is possible to understand Sophie’s persona
through her acceptance of being a perfect Evil at the end of the story, making up her mind and
bringing her toward her individuation. The persona is the second part of the unconscious mind and
it can balance both the Ego and the personal unconscious part of Sophie. The persona, according to
