As you explore career options, you may find that you're interested in a career that requires a graduate degree once you complete your bachelor's degree. While some graduate degrees connect to one's undergraduate major, many people pursue graduate school to focus on a specific area of knowledge related to a career they have discovered.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Which test do I take? When you decide on the type of program, you should look at each school to see what they require. You might find that the school you want attend doesn't even require a test. The GRE is the most common test, but for those pursuing professional degrees in law and medicine, there are specific tests. For business, the GMAT is popular but more programs are accepting the GRE.
- Do I apply for financial aid? How do I get a scholarship? You should apply for financial aid in order to be considered for loans, federal work study opportunities, and possible scholarship opportunities. In graduate school, you will not have the same access to grants but you may the opportunity to apply for assistantships that often provide a stipend as well as tuition discounts.
- Will I have to complete an interview? For many professionial programs in the healthcare field or graduate programs where you'll be entering a human services/counseling or education career, you will have to complete an interview. For programs with assistantship or scholarship opportunities, interviews may occur at that time as well. The CCLD offers mock interviews with career advisors via Handshake.
- When should I apply? Typically, you should be getting ready to apply at least one year before you plan to enroll. However, applications for medical and other professional health fields often open in July and early applicants benefit from the rolling admissions process. This means the school will interview and select applicants as they apply. A competitive program with a late deadline may have a full class by the deadline. - Will I be able to start a program in the spring or summer? This depend on the program. Many professional programs start in fall only but more are offering programs for working adults that start at any time. Many physical therapy programs actually start the summer after May graduation.
- How many schools should I apply to? The application process can be expensive, so you want to be selective on where you apply. However, you should also consider the competitiveness of your field.
