FACULTY RECOGNITION
SHANNON RIDDLE, lecturer in the Department of Media, Culture, and the Arts, was chosen in 2018 as the
featured Resident Fellow at the Ampersand Artists Guild. Duties included curating exhibitions, two solo
exhibitions, and leading various creative workshops.
DR. ARTHUR (CHIP) ROGERS, associate professor of English and coordinator of English programs, along
with his co-presenter, led “Labor, Birth, Infancy: Birthing Graduate Programs in Technical Writing and Digi-
tal Communication” at the 2018 Georgia Council of Graduate Schools Conference.
DR. CAROL SPRINGER SARGENT, professor of accounting, was the faculty advisor for the team that won
first place in the 2018 State-Wide Internal Audit Case Competition. She also published an article in Cur-
rent Issues in Auditing titled “Super Shears: Micro Cases to Reduce Confirmation Bias in Evaluating Man-
agement Estimates.”
DR. MICHELE SCORDATO, assistant professor of clinical social work, was a reviewer for the 9th Interna-
tional Conference on Social Work and Mental Health in 2018. Scordato was also the manuscript reviewer
for The New Social Worker in 2018 as well as a project facilitator for the development of a Community
Fatality Review Project with the Central Georgia Council on Family Violence in 2018.
DR. DAWN SHERRY, professor of biology and chair of natural sciences, presented “Cultivating STEM Ma-
jors at Middle Georgia State University” at the 2018 USG STEM Summit.
DR. SHAMANI SHIKWAMBI, associate professor of education, co-wrote “Classroom Intervention to Aid
Students with Dyslexia” which was published in the Kentucky Reading Journal. Shikwambi also delivered
“The Need to Hand the Baton Over to the Youth” as part of the 2018 Africa Lecture Series hosted at Mid-
dle Georgia State University.
DR. LAURA THOMASON, professor of English and director of international programs, presented “Partner-
ships in International Service Learning at Home and Abroad” with Chris Tsavatewa at the 2018 meeting of
the National Society for Experiential Education. She also presented this paper at the 2018 meeting of the
Georgia Collegiate Honors Council.
CHRISTOPHER TSAVATEWA, assistant professor of health administration and director of QEP and the
Office of Experiential Learning, presented “Partnerships in International Service Learning at Home and
Abroad” with Laura Thomason at the 2018 meeting of the National Society for Experiential Education.
He presented, “Lions, Tigers, and Funding Shortages Oh My!: Barriers and Successes of an Experiential
Learning QEP” and “A QEP’s Impact on Culture: Lessons from A New Consolidated and Elevated State
University” at the Biennial Conference of the Council for Undergraduate Research. Tsavatewa also partic-
ipated in a roundtable discussion of the Acme Brewing Historical Society at the meeting of the Georgia
Association of Historians.
DR. DAVID VOGEL, associate professor of mathematics, co-authored “‘Lacing’: A Novel Way to Teach
Polynomial or Rational Inequalities” with Lily Wang; the article was published in MathAMATYC Educator.
DR. LAURIE WALTERS, associate professor of psychology, presented “A Tale of Two Psychology Classes:
Initial Redesign Findings” with Ervin Briones at the 2018 Gateway Course Experience Conference. She
presented “Psychology 1101: What Do You Find When You Redesign?” with co-authors Paul Gladden and
Ervin Briones at the Gateways to Completion Fall 2018 meeting. She also presented “Introduction to
Psychology Redesigned” with Paul Gladden and Ervin Briones at the 2019 Gateway Course Experience
Conference.
DR. LILY WANG, associate professor of mathematics, co-authored “‘Lacing’: A Novel Way to Teach Poly-
nomial or Rational Inequalities” with David Vogel; the article was published in MathAMATYC Educator.
DR. KERI WILBUR, associate professor of nursing, presented “Shortening Our Lives While Helping You
Live Longer” at the 2019 Georgia Association of Nurse Educators Conference.
