JOSEPH GARRISON, associate professor of mathematics, wrote “The Telescoping Series- Extended” and
“An Essay Concerning Challenges in the Teaching of Calculus ‘Trigonometric Substitution.’”
DR. PAUL R. GLADDEN, associate professor of psychology and interim department chair, published “Slow
Life History Strategy Predicts Six Moral Foundations” in EvoS Journal: The Journal of the Evolutionary
Studies Consortium. He published the article “Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence” in the En-
cyclopedia of Evolutionary Psychological Science. Gladden published two articles in the Encyclopedia of
Personality and Individual Differences, “Social Selection for Human Altruism” and “Sexual Promiscuity.” He
presented “Psychology 1101: What Do You Find When You Redesign?” with co-authors Laurie Walters and
Ervin Briones at the Gateways to Completion Fall 2018 meeting. He presented “Introduction to Psychol-
ogy Redesigned” with Laurie Walters and Ervin Briones at the 2019 Gateway Course Experience Confer-
ence.
DR. SUMITRA HIMANGSHU-PENNYBACKER,
associate professor of education and assess-
ment coordinator, presented “The ETS Expe-
rience: Informing the GACE Program Admis-
sion Assessment” at the 2018 GAPSC Drive-In
Conference. She and Sherie Owens presented
“Sped-ing Their Way: Using Concept Mapping
to Analyze Reflections of Preservice Teachers
in a Separate School” at the 2018 International
Conference on Concept Mapping and pub-
lished it in Proceedings of the 8th Internation-
al Conference on Concept Mapping: Concept
Mapping: Renewing Learning and Thinking.
She presented “The Engaged Classroom: A
Road Map for Classroom Instruction” at the
International Conference on Concept Map-
ping. She co-presented “Applying Depth of
Knowledge Level 4 to NESA Virtual Science
& Engineering Fair Round” with Randy Spaid
at the 2018 SASTE Annual Conference. She
co-presented “Latent Pressures: Minorities
and Microaggression in Higher Education” at
the 2018 Hawaii International Conference on
Education. She co-partnered with Wesleyan
College to write “A Public/Private Collabora-
tion for Engaging At-Risk First-Year Students”
for the Beyond Theory to Practice Grant Pro-
posal.
DR. SCOTT HINZE, assistant professor of psychology, published “Using Natural Language Processing to
Assess Explanation Quality in Retrieval Practice Tasks” in Companion Proceedings of the 9th International
Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge. He presented three research posters: “Epistemologi-
cal Beliefs in Experimental Psychology Courses” at the 2019 University System of Georgia Teaching and
Learning Conference, “Effects of Online and Offline Explanation Strategies in the Comprehension of Sci-
entific Texts” at the 2018 meeting of the Psychonomic Society, and “Proactive Interference in Multiple Text
Comprehension: Contingent on the Semantic Relatedness of Texts, and Resistant to Intentional Forget-
ting” at the 2018 meeting of the Society for Text and Discourse.
DR. MATTHEW T. HOUSTON, assistant professor of mathematics, co-authored the article “A Review of
Mathematical Models for Muscular Dystrophy: A Systems Biology Approach.” His dissertation entitled
“The FRiND Model: A Mathematical Model for Representing Immunological Interactions in Muscular Dys-
trophy Pathogenesis” can be downloaded from the UGA Electronic Theses and Dissertations Record.
DR. XIAOYAN (SHANNON) HU, assistant professor of mathematics, presented the mathematical proof
“Journey to the Center of the Triangle.”
