Honorary Societies


  • Pi Gamma Mu (ΠΓΜ) - Georgia Tau (Τ) chapter: International honor society in the social sciences.
    • Chapter advisor: Dr. John Powell Hall.
    • Student membership requirements at MGA:
      • Students completing any academic major or minor are eligible for membership.
      • Second semester sophomore or higher academic standing (completion of at least 45 semester hours of credit, including transfer and credit by examination).
      • Minimum cumulative GPA in top 35% of class (approximately 3.2–3.3 in recent years).
      • An average of "B" or higher, with no "F"'s, in at least 20 semester hours of courses in the social sciences (anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology).
    • Membership invitations are generally issued annually in the spring semester.
    • Benefits:
      • Lifetime membership, transferable to other chapters.
      • Membership certificate and key pin; a stole and honor cords for wear at commencement and other merchandise may be purchased at additional charge.
  • Pi Sigma Alpha (ΠΣΑ) - Alpha Mu Zeta (ΑΜΖ) chapter: National honor society in political science.
    • Chapter advisor: Dr. Christopher N. Lawrence. 
    • Student membership requirements at MGA:
      • Students completing any academic major or minor are eligible for membership.
      • Junior academic standing (completion of at least 60 semester hours of credit, including transfer and credit by examination).
      • Minimum cumulative GPA in top third of class (approximately 3.2–3.3 in recent years).
      • An average of "B" or higher across 10 semester hours or more of political science courses (POLS), at least one of which must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.
    • Membership invitations are generally issued annually in the spring semester.
    • Benefits:
      • Lifetime membership, transferable to other chapters.
      • Membership certificate; members may also purchase a medallion and honor cords for wear at commencement, along with additional merchandise.

Eligible students may join both organizations.
